Noto ( Nuoto in Sicilian) is an Italian town of 24,047 inhabitants [3] in the province of Siracusa in Sicily.

It is the first town in Sicily and the Italian quarter for territorial extension (550 km ²).

Referred to as the "Capital of Baroque" , in 2002 the old town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO , along with Val di Noto.

Noto is 31 km from Syracuse , and is located in the south- west of the province at the foot of the mountains Hyblaean . Its coast , between Avola and Pachino , gives its name to the gulf. With its 550.86 km ² of surface area , the town of Noto occupies more than a quarter of the province of Syracuse and is the largest municipality of Sicily and the fourth of Italy . In its territory two rivers : the Tellaro, near which was found a Roman villa , just call Villa del Tellaro, and Asinaro , whose mouth , in the district Calabernardo , took place the famous battle between the Athenians and the Syracusans , who ended with the defeat of the first , marking the defeat of the Athenian expedition to Sicily and the beginning of the decline of Athens, who shortly thereafter as a result of this defeat , he would have lost the war in which you inserted the Sicilian expedition against Syracuse , a Peloponnesian War .
