Syracuse (IPA: [siraku ː za], Sarausa in Sicilian) is an Italian town of 118 706 inhabitants, [1] capital of the province of Sicily.

Located on the southeastern coast of the island, is the fourth largest city in Sicily by population, after Palermo, Catania and Messina, in the past Syracuse was one of the biggest metropolis of the ancient world and among the largest in the world greek polis . In addition, for over a millennium, until the Islamic conquest of Sicily, was the most important city in Sicily and the island's capital in the Roman period and the Byzantine Empire.

Characterized by enormous wealth and relevances important historical, archaeological and landscape profile ancient, Renaissance and Baroque, in 2005 the city was awarded the title of World Heritage by UNESCO together with the ancient center of Syracuse.
